Eddy's Guitar

Featured in MIM’s I Am AZ Music exhibition, Duane Eddy’s futuristic-looking double-neck “Howard” electric guitar was built in 1960 by Tom Howard McCormick of Howtronics in Phoenix, Arizona. McCormick was known for his innovative custom amplifiers; there are very few examples of his guitars, making this double-neck rare. With its rosewood fretboards, backwards-Explorer headstocks that predate Robin guitars by twenty years, high fidelity pickups, and long sustain, the instrument is a striking symbol from Eddy’s pioneering rock-and-roll career.

ALS Hits the Ring

This year marks the third annual fundraising event called Bite Nite, which supports the local chapter of ALS. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. It was first discovered in 1869 and brought to the forefront in 1938 when the famed New York baseball player suddenly retired. This devastating affliction for sufferers comes each day with a fight for more awareness and a cure that doesn’t currently exist.

Looking Back on Another Season

It’s spring in Arizona and the time when Valley temperatures heat up and charity events cool down. Not all nonprofit fundraisers will have ended, but by the end of April there will only be only a handful left. This season there were hundreds of charity events, all for worthy causes. Whether it was a luncheon, a walk, a black-tie gala or just a raffle, these activities are the bloodline to our nonprofit community.

Turning 100 is Not for the Faint of Heart

Last month Arizona celebrated 100 years of statehood on Valentine’s Day. This special day was honored in grand style downtown at the Phoenix Convention Center with a whopping 1,800 guests, among them: Wayne Newton, Sandra Day O’Connor, Governor Brewer and Esteban, who all engaged and entertained everyone. It was a birthday party worthy of any state in the union and it was appropriately called, Fandango! Arizona.
